Abundance?

Nearly anyone who knows anything about law of attraction knows about abundance. You’ll undoubtedly have encountered many authors who comment about teaching you how to live an abundant life. Or you may have encountered those who will give you the “how to…” when it comes to abundance.

Now I’m not trying to suggest that I have any problem with abundance. That would seem silly given what this blog is about. But I do in fact have some problems with the way most people think about having abundance in their lives.

It seems to me that too many people think that having abundance in their lives means having just those things they prefer, the things that they enjoy or that make them happy. It occurs to me that before I go on to talk about being happy it could be helpful for me to say something yet again about abundance.

The idea of living in an abundant world does not mean only experiencing those things you find pleasant, enjoyable, supportive, and beneficial. To live in a truly abundant world means to live in a world with some things you don’t enjoy, don’t like, don’t find supportive or enjoyable. That’s not to say you would never find something you don’t find enjoyable and beneficial in your experience of abundance. But to limit your interpretation of abundance to include only those things you regard as positive is to miss out on the benefit that can be gained from learning how to benefit from that which you regard as “negative.”

As part of the overall abundance picture, that which we regard as “negative” are those things and circumstances that can ultimately help us shape our understanding of what we want. The experience of the so-called “negative” and the exclusion of these experiences from any vision of abundance is to miss the opportunity to sharpen you vision for a fulfilled and well-lived life.

Remember, your vision of what you regard as “negative” may not be shared with others. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. When you can learn to see the value in the seemingly “negative” you’ll know you are truly participating in the abundance of the world.

As a psychologist it’s sometimes hard for me not to look at what’s happening in society and think of how it impacts the lives of individuals and groups. I’m aware of how large-scale social trends can be reflected in our popular culture, particularly in the various forms of media–television shows, movies, news stories, and on the internet in a variety of ways.

In my interest to help others become more effective at getting what they desire in their lives, I’ve felt it important to begin a new category of posts on my blog devoted to commenting on the influence I see in these various media. My view is, if you want to be successful at applying the law of attraction and at having the kinds of experiences you associate with living a fulfilling life experience, it can be quite beneficial to see how the various media I’ve mentioned shape and influence how you view yourself and your world.

As you may have noticed from some of the other posts presented here, I take a somewhat different view of the topic of applying the law of attraction. I look at the recommendations made by other writers on the topic of law of attraction and see that the efforts to teach techniques like visualization, taking a stance in gratitude and appreciation, affirmations, and the like all reflect a single intent… to move you in the direction of Feeling a sense of connection between yourself and what you desire.

If that’s the case, I ask myself, if what so many authors are trying to do is to get you to feel a sense of connection between yourself and what you desire, then isn’t it a sense of separation or a perception of separation that is regarded as the barrier to the success you desire. And if that’s the case, if what you’re truly after in order to get the law of attraction to “work” for you, as so many authors describe it, is to break down the sense of separation that seems to defeat your efforts, then why not simply address the mindset that underlies the sense of separation. This would seem to make the process of affirmations, visualizations, and other tools all the more effective, at least as I understand it.

This brings me back to the reason for this post in the first place. That is, the influence of the media on your worldview and on your ability to realize the kind of outcomes you desire when applying the law of attraction.

If the media is continually sending you a message telling you there is a host of things out in the world to fear; that uncertainty represents a threat, or that some catastrophe is just around the corner, there is going to be a tendency to believe that message simply because of how often it’s presented. What’s more, from the stand point of law of attraction we already know that if you’re giving your attention to this kind of event, you’re all the more likely to experience it. You’ll “attract” it into your life, as is so often suggested.

What’s the antidote, you might ask? Since it’s not likely you’ll be able to stop the various media from throwing this “negative” information into the world for consumption, how can you change the game and get more of what you desire regardless of the message from the various media?

By enhancing your level of awareness. When you understand that your view of yourself and your world can be influence by the messages you consume, you can recognize that you can have a choice. You in essence empower your participation in what you’re doing through your awareness of how such a message could potentially impact you.

Knowing about law of attraction does not exempt you from the influence of negativity in your life regardless of where you find it. But you can become aware of how the images you’re exposed to come to influence how you see yourself and your world. It is with this influence in mind that I inaugurate this new category on my blog.

As usual,

Best wishes,

About the Break…

Prior to this post, the last entry was in October last year.  I took time away from writing for two primary reasons.  First, I began studying for my board examinations in psychology.  I found trying to transition from one world to another a bit difficult and I quickly realized that trying to maintain both was resulting

Secondly, I had begun running into some new information that was changing how I was viewing the Law of Attraction and related universal principles.  In my early contact with some of this new information I recognized that my own thinking, my own ideas about this topic was about to change.  Thus, I wanted to take the time to absorb the new information I was exposed to and begin to assimilate it into how I view Law of Attraction and what I’m thinking.  This has also led me to rethinking what I’m doing with this blog.

What you’ll see in the weeks and months to come will be a reflection of the changes I’ve been going through personally, and how those changes have impacted how I’m thinking about this information.  It is still my objective to make the information I share here be useful to others, and in that regard I remain open as always to receiving constructive and positive comments.

Best wishes,

James Arthur Ray Arrested

Earlier today spiritual guru, James Arthur Ray was arrested and charged with 3 counts of man slaughter associated with tragic incidents that occurred in Arizona last fall.  This tragedy underscores the importance of recognizing the psychological challenges that can be faced when seeking consciousness transformation.

I don’t mean to suggest that the individuals whose lives were tragically lost or those who were sick or injured suffered from psychological problems, rather I mean to direct my attention to the leaders of these events, and their need to be more aware of the challenges their attendees may experience.

It seems quite clear to me that a transformation is occurring in the collective human consciousness.  The increasing popularity of the message James Arthur Ray and others are providing is itself evidence of this unfolding transformation.  Each individual’s readiness to participate in the exercises intended to bring about this transformation needs to be assessed carefully.  Assessing each individual’s readiness to participate occurs to me to be respectful of the individual as well as the process they are expected to go through; to say nothing of the importance of calling attention to the leader’s readiness to provide a safe space both physically as well as psychologically for their participants.

Unleash the power of your mind

How many times have you heard a statement like “unleash the power of your mind” in self-empowerment, personal growth and development literature?  I can’t even count myself.  There was a time when I used to accept these statements believing who ever said them was really on to something.  Don’t get me wrong, I still think this is a valuable sentiment.  I just think our understanding has evolved some and it’s helpful to try to keep up.

Personally, I don’t think our mind has any creative power of its own.  It’s simply a filter, a pass-through point for the creative power.  Granted it channels that creative power by virtue of the thoughts one thinks, beliefs one holds, and attitudes one finds oneself in, but the creative power we seem to speak of so frequently is not its own.  So where does this “power” come from would be a reasonable question.

The same animating force that gives life to the body is the source of the creative power the ego wields.  Yet the ego, the mind, seems to get the credit so often for the apparent creative ability of the mind.  This is a little like saying the hose is the same as the water that comes out of it.  Both work together to bring the water (life giving and vitalizing energy) through the conduit that gives direction and form to the unlimited and abundant life force within (the mind, the ego, or identity) resulting in the manifestations we experience.

Could this change one’s perception of the Law of Attraction?  Possibly, it depends upon what you’re image of the way in which the Law operates has been.  I’ve found many who say they “believe in” the law of attraction also say they have not seen consistent results from its application.  However, one’s belief in the Law of Attraction and reference to it as “working” in their lives seems to reflect something else.  As a law, it is operative all the time.  Like gravity.  One wouldn’t say that the law of gravity operates only when one chooses to use it, or believe it doesn’t work for someone unless they believe in the law of gravity.  To “believe in” the Law of Attraction because one sees it “working” is really a reflection of the difference between the conscious and deliberate use of the law, creating deliberately, and an unconscious application of the principles resulting in a haphazard and inconsistent outcome.  This is a process of creating by default, as Esther and Jerry Hicks say.

So what might be an alternative?  Operating from an understanding that abundance is the natural state of affairs in the universe.  There is nothing to “believe in” when approaching the Law of Attraction from this perspective.  Just as you “know” the law of gravity is present and works for everyone, so too does the Law of Attraction.  Starting from an awareness and knowledge that abundance IS the natural state of affairs, you need only decide what you wish to bring into your direct experience at this time.

Keep in mind that the abundant nature of the universe includes the presence of those things you may not want to experience now, or at any time, for that matter.  However, saying “NO” to what you don’t want is simply inviting more of what you DON’T want into your experience.  The universe operates on the basis of inclusion.  That which gets included in your awareness is drawn to you.

All beliefs are limiting.  It’s in their nature to be so.  Just like the hose is limiting the water, so too our consciousness limits and regulates the flow of energy into the world through our beliefs and where we happen to have our attention focused.

Try operating from an understanding that the natural state of affairs in the universe is abundance, and then chip away at the conversation in your head that tries to get you not to believe it.  It’s just your ego trying to convince you that its input is necessary, and the only thing you need to consider.  Its input is valuable, but it’s not the only player in the game.

Law of Attraction in Action

Last week I worked doing interviews for a product I’ll have out sometime in early April. It’s called, “How Getting What You Get is No Secret: Abundance, Psychology, and the Law of Attraction.”

I can’t wait to get it out and start getting input back from the public. Something else happened last week that shows how this process works.

I finished the audio taping on Thursday last week and was focusing on writing some articles to promote my new product when I received a call from a friend who asked if I wanted to be on television. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I’ve never been on television before, and my first reaction was, of course, to say yes, but I was also quite nervous. I didn’t know what to say or how to prepare. I recognized that I’d become very anxious about what I might do.

Such emotional states just don’t help. They distract us from seeing the opportunities that are right in front of us. They also take a lot of energy to manage. I focused on just allowing the process to unfold. Each time I found myself feeling anxious or nervous, I just stepped back trying to see what I was really getting reacted to.

Old patterns that tell me “I’m not good enough” or “Why would anyone want to listen to what you have to say” just find their way up. This is just old thinking, and it’s grounded in an ego-based mindset that just doesn’t serve me very well any more (more about that in the next post).

Once calmed down, I found I had a lot of information available. The interview went well and although a little nervous during the taping, I was able to get my message out. What’s more, this is just the beginning. This has already started to blossom into other opportunities and the piece hasn’t even aired yet.

This, I felt, was an excellent demonstration of how the process works, and how we can find our own habits of thought and behavior interfering with the unfolding of this process.

As I’m writing this it’s Friday, March 13, 2009. The news piece will air on Monday, March 16. Abundance is around us all the time, all you need to do is let it into your experience. This is really the message of the Law of Attraction.
